Standard terrestrial TV is going the way of magazines and streaming is the way of the future. Or is it? In late 2022 and early 2023, places like Disney+, HBO Max and Netflix have begun cost cutting and reassessing their dominance over audiences. Because YouTube essentially has people all over the world making them content for free and audiences watch it in their millions (or billions)…the future for paid services are looking, rocky.
YouTube offers creators the ability to create an online community with devoted audiences, the key takeaways from how this is achieved can be easily transferred to any business trying to expand their following online. Here’s a Top 6 of some really interesting YouTube channels and how what they do draws in an audience.
Mr Beast. 96 million subscribers. 15.8 billion views. This channel started from humble beginnings of simple Minecraft videos, to the breakout success with vides such as: reading the entire dictionary out loud in 8 hours, saying ‘Logan Paul’ 100,000 times in 17 hours and spinning a Fidget Spinner for 24 hours. All very silly things to do, but what he did with the money he made was the interesting thing. Essentially, he would use the money to make videos where he gave away money to charity or those in need. For instance, going into Walmart and buying every product in the store and giving it to a local charity. These ‘crazy’ videos have been watched over 15 billion times, the key with these videos are that they are inventive and exciting in the way that they give money away and he’s having so much fun doing it. Videos with a social consciousness tap into an altruism which makes us feel happy and engaged, plus keeps us coming back for more.
Red Letter Media. 1.4 million subscribers. 875 million views. Essentially this is a group of guys reviewing movies, however the way they do this is similar to the Jeremy Clarkson era of TV’s ‘Top Gear’. What made ‘Top Gear’ such a success (it being the world’s number 1 show for many years), was the personality of the presenters. Even if you had no interest in cars whatsoever, the exploits of Jeremy, James and Richard were so funny and engaging, and the way in which they spoke about cars was so impassioned, you tuned in each week. Red Letter Media does the same with Mike, Rich and Jay. It’s their passion for the topic and the entertaining way in which they deliver the information which makes them a hit online.
Froggy Flips. 249,000 subscribers. 39 million views. Essentially, Anthony walks around home sales with a GoPro camera attached to him and he goes on the hunt for collectables which he can sell in an antique store and on eBay. There are two things that are compelling: 1. What will he find 2. How polite he will be to everyone he meets…honestly, this is the most polite person on the internet…just his personality will put a smile on your face.
Patrick (H) Willems. 365,000 subscribers. 40 million views. In Patrick’s videos, he gives detailed breakdowns of media theory around film production. What stands out here is the quality of the editing and delivery of information, there are a million film review videos out there, but what helps Patrick stand out is the depth of knowledge in the presentation. This translates to your video productions, being interested in what you do is interesting to others.
Postmodern Jukebox. 5.71 million subscribers. 1.8 billion views. This is a channel for a band who cover mainstream songs in a range of different styles, such as blues, ragtime, 60’s and many more. By taking something you know, like ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ and covering it in a New Orleans style means that you capture the interest of people who like the song and want to hear it in a new way. Even those who don’t like the song and hope they’ll like it sung in a new fashion. The main takeaway here is to give the audience something which they can’t find anywhere else.
Key Of Geebz. 232,000 subscribers. 26 million views. George is a composer who does music reaction videos. There are a lot of ‘reaction’ videos on YouTube, the key reason for their success is that viewers like to see someone else’s reaction to hearing/seeing for the first time something which the viewer loves. The viewer knows all the moments which are special to them and they want to see if the person in the video will have as big a reaction as they do. What’s great about George is that he also knows his subject, so when he is commenting on a song he really knows what he is talking about. There is also a little ‘Top Gear’ to this too, he can go deep into music composition theory, however his delivery is such that the audience goes with him and comes out the other side better educated on the subject.
Mr Sunday Movies. 1.34 million subscribers. 582 million views. James and Mason create here a range of movie-based critique videos. What sets them apart is their humor and banter. Their videos are produced to a high standard by utilizing a range of editors across the globe. Yes it means that much of the production budget is spent on editing but it leaves James and Mason with the time to do their research and get their content right, and this is what brings people back for more.
The Race. 969k subscribers. 345 million views. Essentially this is a channel which follows Formula 1. Their videos are focused upon current news stories surrounding the sport. Their videos are well produced with a strong branding. In a world where content is thrown at you all of the time, branding will set you apart and be a stamp of quality which people will choose to watch over others.
Lost In Adaptation – Dominic Noble. 322k subscribers. 60 million views. Here, Dominic breaks down how novels have been adapted to film. Once again it the content and the personality which draws viewers in time and again. It’s also easier to watch one of his videos than reading the book!
