SHOOTING WITH A PHONE VS. A VIDEO CAMERA

Writer: Tasman Bay MediaTasman Bay Media

Filming on a mobile phone is sometimes convenient when you see something that’s a once in a lifetime shot and the phone is all you’ve got. But filming for promotion or training, you’ll need something with a little more grunt.

So what’s the difference between filming on a phone or a full camera setup.

- Mobile phone footage looks fine on a small screen, but blown up to TV screen it will look amateurish.

- Most video camera lenses are more expensive than an entire mobile phone, real camera lenses are made out of properly treated glass which will give a clarity to the image.

- Lining up a shot is something which takes years of experience to perfect. Understanding that every little detail which is onscreen and the angle which is filmed from is extremely important to the composition of the shot is key. You can line up a shot on a phone, but the limitations of the mobile will detract from the shot.

- With a full camera kit will come lighting. This is vital to give a professional finish to the shots.

- Also with the camera kit is a broadcast quality wireless clip mic. Poor sound from a mobile phone will be the first indication that you put little effort into your videos…and possibly that you put little effort into your business itself. Perception is everything.
