Regular clients like Golden Bay Fruit sometimes need something a little special to send their international markets, find out the behind-the-scenes scoop on their Chinese video series.
BRIEF: Create 4 short videos about CherishTM apples and 4 more about PiqaTMBooTM pears.
PRODUCTION: The challenge here was that the videos would be shared on the Chinese version of TikTok which has its own format settings and requires the video to be filmed in ‘portrait’ rather than ‘landscape’. Filming professionally for 20 years in ‘landscape’ and then flipping the camera on it’s side to film ‘portrait’ does bring up a few challenges:
- It takes many years to learn how to film a widescreen image, which includes everything from placement of the subject matter, effective use of ‘dead’ space and using the width of the screen to convey space.
- Using the camera in ‘portrait’ (to mimic a mobile phone user) means that the widescreen vista is taken away, especially if you require to see your subject (person/apple/pear) in a medium or close up shot. In regards to a person, you are left with a shot of their face and then the space down to their waist, which block the rest of the screen.
- Also, it sounds silly, but now all of the camera controls are in the wrong place. Which can be a little funny when searching for something which you know was there yesterday.
However new trends like TikTok need to be followed and gotten used to. With these productions we have really found some innovative and fun ways to newly film images that would have been otherwise impossible.
