“IS CHANGING THE MUSIC A BIG JOB?”

Back in or April 2021 blog we touched upon why audio is so important and in June we mentioned the process of finding that ‘perfect’ track for your video.

At Tasman Bay Media, our process for music tends to go like this:

- We search through around 20,000 or so music tracks online

- We try to find something with the right tempo, style and lifts and dips to help tell your story.

- We’ll then send you our top three choices for you to pick from.

- The music is then edited into the video from your choice.

We go through this process of confirming the track with you before we edit because so much of the edit is structured around the music.

What is structured around the music?:

- First the music gets markers to indicate where the beat of the music lays.

- The music is either shortened or lengthened. This is a process of finding where the music loops and how one section can run into the next.

- Each piece of dialogue, if it’s a Piece To Camera or voice over, is placed in a part of the music where the instruments allow the talking to ‘breathe’ without it becoming ‘muddy’.

- All animation is timed to the pace of the music.

- Shots are normally cut to the beat of the music. This gives more impact to the start of each shot.

- We listen to the music to here where the ‘drop’ or music builds to. Before that point we have ‘little’ shots that build to a key visual which is then revealed at the point where the music climaxes. Sometimes this can be five or six times a video.

- The start and end of the video is intrinsically linked to the shots and animation used.

So if the music has been decided to be changed after the edit is finished, is changing the music a big job? Yep.
