So you’re making a video, but what should be in the script?
TRAINING
In Training your main goal is to deliver information to your staff. It may be: an induction, health and safety, job specific skillset training or anything else.
The best starting point is with what you already have. It may be your health and safety manual/guidelines, systems and processes folder or even the material given to you with the tools you work or process with, which you can then turn that into a script. Or we’ll be happy to transform any of that information into a script and put it on the autocue (this way no one has to remember all the information they need to give, it’ll be right up there in front of the camera to read).
If the information is brand new or locked away in someones head then you’ll just have to type it up (so then we can also pop it on the autocue). There may be cases where people feel it’ll be easier to ‘wing it’ and just talk on camera, which is fine, there’ll be a few stutters and the odd pause, but we’ll do our best to smooth it out in editing with graphics or a ‘punch in’ (where we crop into the shot so that we can delete any mistakes or second tries).
If your management team need to deliver a message best course of action is to have them write the script themselves. What this will do is make the filming process a lot easier as they know exactly what’s in the content and it will be in their own speech patterns (which helps eliminate tongue twisters). Again we’re happy to put this on the auto cue to give your presenter the most confident reading possible.
MARKETING
First off we’ll sit down with you to work out the concept (plus what type of video it is, what’s the audience, current trends and distribution channels…check out information for all of these in other recent and upcoming posts on this blog).
Then you can get on to the script. You may have an amazing talent for writing, if in that case go for it! If not, the best thing to do is give us bullet points about you, your business and the products and we’ll get to work.
All areas of production are a collaborative process, in which case we can put something together, get your feedback and make alterations. The script is the most important starting block and if you get this right then you’ll be off to a flying start.
And something to keep in mind for working on the script…Over in the UK the BBC’s founding principles were ‘Inform, Educate and Entertain’. You may feel that these don’t relate to your business, but they do. You can ‘Inform’ your customers about what’s new and exciting at your business. You can ‘Educate’ your customers about the intricate details which go into your product or service. You can ‘Entertain’ by injecting your personality or creativity with fun and exciting concepts. And if you can incorporate all three at once, well, you’ve cracked the code. It works for the big boys, it can work for you too!
