How It All Began - Part 4: TVNZ

Writer: Tasman Bay MediaTasman Bay Media

This month we look into ‘how it all began’ for Tasman Bay Media, with ‘Part 4: TVNZ’.

After Simon and Kate met working onboard cruise ships (see Part 3 for the full story) they moved to New Zealand. Kate had been away for a few years working and always loved coming home to Upper Moutere, this time she was brining Simon back with her.

They moved to Auckland and Simon started working at TVNZ. His role was as a video editor (though it’s called media editor so not to use the title ‘editor’, as in journalism that’s reserved for the heads of news). Simon was editing for ‘One News At Six’, ‘Close Up’, ‘Te Karere’ and ‘Breakfast’.

The process for video editing for the news goes like this:

- The journalist comes into the edit suite with the script and a link to the shots they want to use in the story (with the footage stored on the news server).

- They go into the sound booth next door and the editor records the voiceover.

- The editor then puts the story together with use of the script.

- The editor and journalist then go through the video making any changes they would like, sometimes finding new shots to add if they want to add a little more to the story.

- At this time some journalists like to rerecord their voiceover with a new script as they want to come at the story from a different angle…which makes the video editors heart stop as they can see there’s not long until six o’clock and the news goes live.

- Once it’s all finished, the video is then exported and sent to MX (Media Exchange), where the video sits ready to be played live on TV.

Most of the time a story comes in to edit about an hour to half an hour before the start of the news, sometimes it’s less than ten! In these cases, the editing needs to be done quickly and as you send it to MX you look across to the TV with the live feed and your edit is played almost instantaneously, they’re some of the more heart stopping times.

Simon spent a year with TVNZ and mostly found that it was a rewarding experience, however when you are only a cog in the machine you don’t get the fun of the entire scope of video production.

Next month we look into ‘how it all began’ with ‘Part 5: KOR’
