This month we look into ‘how it all began’ for Tasman Bay Media, with ‘Part 2: BBC’.
After his degree, Simon was enrolled on a postgraduate course. Training was provided by Anita Walsh (a BBC commissioning editor), Charles Hunter (BBC Producer), and a wide range of others from across the BBC, ITV and independent film. The main takeaway from this was the importance for the creation of ideas, with a mock pitch meeting leading to Simon being employed by the BBC Politics Show.
For the show Simon would work across many aspects of the program, from research, content idea creation, location management, TV studio work and lots more. The show’s executive producers were Bob Geldof (musician and creator of 1985’s Live Aid global concert) and Lenny Henry (comedian and founder of the UK’s Comic Relief, which has raised over 1 billion pounds for charity).
It was a thrill to be working for the BBC and to see TV production from the inside. As with many aspects of production, everything you’d learnt was needed more than ever, but also everything you know was thrown out the window.
Next month we look into ‘how it all began’ with ‘Part 3: Cruise Ships’
